Professional Communication Coaching: Make Your Ideas Land
Some of the most consequential communication problems aren’t disorders at all. The engineer whose brilliant work gets lost in a mumbled monotone. The new manager whose voice gives out after back-to-back calls. The executive whose presentations are dense when they need to be clear. The professional whose heart pounds so hard before speaking that they avoid it — and whose career quietly narrows because of it.
Speech-language pathologists bring something unusual to communication coaching: clinical training in the actual machinery — voice production, articulation, prosody, language organization — combined with evidence-based methods for changing ingrained speaking habits. This is coaching with mechanics under it.
What we coach
- Vocal presence and stamina. Breath support, resonance, projection without strain, and healthy vocal habits for people who talk for a living — teachers, salespeople, leaders, clinicians. (If you have hoarseness or pain, start with our voice disorders page — that’s clinical territory, and often covered by insurance.)
- Clarity and delivery. Pace, pausing, articulation precision, and killing the monotone — the mechanical fixes that make listeners stop working so hard.
- Message structure. Organizing ideas so they land: executive summaries first, one idea per breath, stories and signposting, ruthless trimming.
- Speaking anxiety. Practical, graduated tools — physiological regulation, preparation systems, exposure practice in session — that shrink the fear to a manageable size.
- High-stakes rehearsal. Your actual keynote, pitch, defense, interview, or all-hands, rehearsed on video with frame-by-frame feedback.
How coaching works
We start with a baseline: a recorded sample of your real speaking (a presentation, a meeting clip) and your goals. From there, weekly online sessions target the two or three highest-leverage changes, with short structured practice between sessions and re-recordings to make progress visible. Coaching blocks are typically 6–12 sessions, timed to a real event when there is one — nothing focuses practice like a keynote on the calendar.
Why online is the natural format
Most high-stakes professional communication now happens through a camera — so coaching through one isn’t a compromise, it’s the actual event conditions. You’ll rehearse on the same platform you present on, review recordings together in real time, and fit sessions into a workday without travel.
Frequently asked questions
Is this therapy or coaching?
Coaching — an elective, private-pay professional development service, not treatment of a disorder. The advantage is that your coach is a licensed SLP, so if a clinical issue surfaces (chronic hoarseness, a fluency disorder), we recognize it and route you to covered clinical care.
Can you help with stuttering in professional settings?
Yes — but that’s clinical fluency therapy rather than coaching, typically covered by insurance, and highly effective for adults. See our stuttering guide; many adult clients work on exactly this: presentations, calls, and interviews.
Do employers pay for this?
Often, yes — under professional development or executive coaching budgets. We can provide invoices and program outlines for approval.
How fast will I see results?
Mechanical changes (pace, pausing, projection) often improve within two or three sessions; deeper habits like structure and anxiety management build over a 6–12 session arc with practice between.
