Insurance and Medicaid in Illinois

Illinois Medicaid — delivered mostly through HealthChoice Illinois managed care plans — covers medically necessary speech therapy for children. Medicaid credentialing is live, and Stoa Therapy continues accepting Illinois Medicaid / HealthChoice Illinois claims. See our insurance and Medicaid guide for details, or send us your insurance information and we’ll verify your benefits for free before your first visit.

Cities we serve across Illinois

Because every session is online, our intended service area includes families in every corner of the state, including Chicago, Aurora, Naperville, Joliet, Rockford, Springfield, Elgin, and Peoria — and everywhere in between. Availability begins as Illinois-licensed clinicians are credentialed.

How online speech therapy works

  1. Join the interest list. Tell us what you’re seeing and share your insurance and scheduling needs. We’ll confirm your interest and contact you when an Illinois-licensed SLP is available.
  2. Evaluation when available. Once an Illinois-licensed SLP is available, we’ll schedule a comprehensive assessment over live video, with clear findings and a written plan of care.
  3. Weekly sessions. After an evaluation and care plan, engaging, play-based (for kids) or goal-driven (for adults) sessions happen from home, with parent coaching and home practice built in.

Frequently asked questions

How quickly can we start?

Illinois sessions open as clinicians are credentialed. Join the interest list and we’ll contact you when an Illinois-licensed SLP is available for your family. There’s no physician referral required to join the list, though we’re glad to coordinate with your pediatrician.

How much will speech therapy cost?

For families accepted into care, most families pay between $0 and $30 per visit after insurance, including Medicaid. We verify your benefits before your first appointment and tell you your expected cost up front — no surprises.

My child gets some speech services through their Illinois school. Can we still use Stoa?

Yes — and it’s common. School services address educational impact and are often limited in frequency. Private therapy through Stoa can supplement an IEP with individual sessions focused on your child’s full communication needs, and we can coordinate goals with your school team if you’d like.

Does online speech therapy really work?

Yes. Peer-reviewed research consistently finds telehealth speech therapy produces outcomes comparable to in-person care across articulation, language, fluency, and voice. Sessions are live, interactive, and built around games and activities kids actually enjoy — and parents are coached as partners, which improves carryover at home.

What ages do you see?

All ages — from toddlers just starting to talk through school-age children, teens, and adults, as clinicians become available.
